The Ides of March Anniversary

Recently I made some pretty good headway on the Morey side of the family. Over Thanksgiving I was able to scan some pictures from my great aunt, and I came across one that had a bunch of people that I didn't recognize. Luckily, all their names were written on the back, and they turned out to be from the Morey family, of which I had very little information.


So from left to right in this picture are Nellie Hannah (Morey) McLeod (1866-193X), Susan Amanda (Greene) Morey-Annners (1845-1925), Edward Henry Morey (1870-1935), Charlotte Amanda (Morey) Marles (1879-1949), and Martha Cornelia (Morey) Wisner (1876-1939).

With the info that was on the back I was able to find more references to the Morey children, and put together a pretty solid picture of their lives thru census records. AND I was also able to find some of their marriages including Susan Amanda's marriage to William Nelson Morey. I did not have a date or any info on it, but now I have these 2 marriage index cards that I found on Familysearch.org.


So with this new information I discovered that today is the 147th anniversary of William Nelson Morey and Amanda Susan Greene, married on 15 March 1865 in St. Albans, Vermont. Also in this string of discoveries I found the names of William's parents, John Morey and Betsey Stearns and their marriage in 1835. I also discovered that William and Susan had at least 2 other children that died as children, John F Morey (1867-1974), and Mary E Morey (1877-1882).

Koop Bareld Koops turns 234

On my mother's side I've been able to trace the Koops line pretty far back, at least into the 1600s. Today happens to be the 234th birthday of my 6 Great Grandfather, who was born on 2 March 1778, in the town of Pieze, in Drenthe, Netherlands. Here is the reference to his birth off of Drenlias.nl.

Gedoopt: Koob, geboren op 02-03-1778, zoon van Barelt Koobs en Roelfien Jakobs.

One of the interesting things is that his name is Koob and not Koop, and the same with his father's second name. Without seeing the original document it's hard to know if this is a typo or if the name has evolved over time.

Here Lyeth The Body Of Edward Thurston

306 years ago, on 1 March 1706, Edward Thurston died in Newport Rhode Island. He is my 10 Great Grandfather, and since he died so long ago the inscription is kinda cool and all olde English like. It says "Here lyeth the body of Edward Thurston who lived 90 years & departed this life ye 28th day of February 1706."

Christopher Douglass - Husband and Cousin

Christopher Douglass was born today 225 years ago, on 22 February 1787 in New London, CT. I don't know if his last name should have 1 s or 2, I have seen it both ways. I have seen it more often with a double s, so that's the way I'm spelling it for now.

His parents, Capt. Daniel Douglass and Lydia Douglass, were 3rd cousins. So does that make Christopher's brothers and sisters also 4th cousins? In addition to that, he married Phebe Douglass, who was his 1st cousin, once removed. If it were me, I might be a little suspicious of marrying someone with the same last name as me, especially when they were born in the same town as me, in the same year...in colonial Connecticut. They must have known. When they were kids at Christmas they would be like "Merry Christmas grandma!"
"No that's great grandma!"
"Hey, wanna get married?"

I have found reference to him in a few different books. Here is a quote that gives a brief summary of his life:

Christopher Douglass was twice descended from William and Ann, who came to Boston in 1640, and to New London about 1651. He was son of Capt. Daniel5 (Robert4, Thomas3, Robert2, William1), and Lydia5 (William4, Richard3, William21); that is, these were third-cousins. Christopher was born February 22, 1787, at New London, Connecticut; married Phoebe Douglass, his mother's brother William Jr.'s granddaughter. Her parents were Ivory Douglass and Phoebe Smith. He came from Cattaraugus county, New York, to section 28, Walworth, in 1837, with ten children. He was chairman of the board of county commissioners, 1840-2, and a supervisor in 1848. He was one of the earliest school commissioners. He died February 16, 1867. His children were: Oscar Houghton, Christopher Columbus, Aurilla Ann, Roxana Columbia, Maria Theresa, Gilbert Lafayette, Phoebe Angeline, Agnes Noailles, Carlos Lavallette, Maria Louisa Josephine.

In the same book in a different section it made reference to the fact that he was at one time judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Erie county, NY, and also served in the war of 1812.

So in the end it looks like he did ok for himself. 10 kids, getting to be called "Your Honor," and the advantage of having 6 fingers.

116 years ago today, on 21 February 1896, Henry Collamer Greene died in St. Albans, Vermont. He was 85 years old
